Ruben Garcia
It is with great pride that we recognize Ruben Garcia as a recipient of the Brownie Van Galder Scholarship.
Ruben stood out at Fresno High as a determined student-athlete whose perseverance, work ethic, and quiet leadership were evident both on and off the field. As a multi-sport athlete in football and tennis, Ruben demonstrated the ability to adapt, compete, and contribute to his teams in meaningful ways. His tennis coach highlighted his leadership, poise, dedication, and willingness to put the team first, including his contribution to a CIF Section Championship.
Ruben’s journey was also marked by resilience. He worked through athletic injuries and personal challenges while continuing to push himself academically and athletically. In his essay, Ruben reflected on how those experiences taught him discipline, time management, emotional control, and the importance of accepting constructive criticism, lessons that will serve him well far beyond high school.
We are proud to support Ruben as he begins the next chapter of his education at UC Merced and are confident he will carry forward the same toughness, humility, and determination that made him such a deserving recipient of this award. Congratulations Ruben!
Rachel Yang
It is with great pride that we recognize Rachel as recipient of the Brownie Van Galder Scholarship.
Rachel distinguished herself at Fresno High through an impressive combination of academics, athletics, leadership, and service to others. A dedicated multi-sport student-athlete, Rachel competed in badminton and tennis while also taking on leadership roles that reflected her commitment to her teammates and school community. Her coaches consistently described her as composed, resilient, dependable, and someone who made those around her better.
Beyond athletics, Rachel demonstrated a genuine passion for giving back. Her involvement included mentoring younger students, supporting community food distribution efforts, volunteering with children, and helping welcome and support new students at Fresno High. Her ability to balance these commitments with a rigorous academic schedule made her an outstanding example of the character, leadership, and service this scholarship was created to recognize.
Rachel will be attending Fresno State, where we know she will continue to bring the same determination, compassion, leadership, and commitment to excellence that distinguished her at Fresno High. Congrats Rachel!!
Christian Olmos
It is with great pride that we introduce the inaugural recipient of the Brownie Van Galder Scholarship.
This year’s winner has demonstrated outstanding athleticism at Fresno High with a penchant for giving back. He embodies what it means to be a “Warrior”. He is passionate about swimming, water polo, and entrepreneurship, and he meets tough decisions with calculation and tenacity. We sincerely hope this scholarship will assist you in your future efforts to excel.
